The Intel CPU i7 940 takes us back to the days of the PIII overclocker, with a quick lesson in CPU multipliers, cash, and convenience. In justice, this multiplier modified (it costs a lot of money to say overclocked) 20 turned 40 is a good CPU. But Intel already spilled how to upgrade your Intel CPU i7 920 for free.

The Intel CPU Core i7 940 - Saving us the trouble of overclocking

A lot of tech reviews give you a quick listing of all of the specs, and then head off to the testing bench for bragging rights. The story of the Intel CPU review for their Core i7 940 Quad processor would seem no different, but for one point. There is no need to list the specs if you are familiar with the Intel CPU Core i7 920. I just tell you to change the multiplier on it from 20x133Mhz to 22x133Mhz. Now back in the day, if I were to post this to my blog, you could always shout back that to do this would void my Intel CPU Core i7 920 warranty. This time is different.

While the Intel CPU i7 940 might not be a huge blip on the CPU radar for most of you, this is for good reason. When Intel first started to promote the i7 series, there was no mention of the 940. The 920 as the entry model and the Extreme 965 as the ultimate toy box were displayed prominently, but the 940 was nowhere to be seen. What replaced honorable mention of the i7 940 was a pamphlet, but out by non other than Intel themselves, that explained hoe to change the multiplier on your i7 920 to achieve 940 stats. In fact the 940 today still carries a TDP of 130W, so even heat factors are exactly the same. The i7 940 is not actually the cheapest computer processor out there, but it sure comes close. If you already own an i7 920, you're in luck, you just saved yourself a few bucks, now overclock to a 940. If you really need the extra CPU power and are now looking for your next PC, the Intel CPU i7 940 Bloomfield is a good CPU, as good as the i7 920 but with a higher default clock speed. The price between the 920 and the i7 940 is about the same as a budget compatible motherboard. The choice is up to you.
